Hope Village Veggie tunnel Project Exit Report
2014-12-15 (see pictures below)

The Long going veggie tunnel project at Hope Village that has been supported by DHP has reached its '5 years of successful growing vegetables' as a supplement for the orphan children. An exit strategy plan was therefore implemented by both DHP and Hope Village in order for Hope Village to carry on producing vegetables for the children
Introduction
The veggie tunnel project at Hope Village was supporting the orphan children by producing enough vegetables for their kitchen. It has been in existence for 5 years and has received much of its support from the Divundu Horticulture Projects (DHP)
In the 5 years of existence the following were achieved:
1. Diversified Vegetable production
When the veggie tunnels were first introduce to Namibia through Judea Harvest, they only produced spinach. But with our planting program we have implemented the following crops:
- Carrots
- Beetroots
- Tomatoes
- Onions
- Leek
- Cabbage
- Green pepper
- Rape
- Herbs
- Chinese green
- Eggplant
- Lettuce
- Beans
- Peas
- Butternut
- Squash
- Cucumber
- Cauliflower
- Broccoli
These were the crops that were grown successfully, in the veggie tunnel production program at Hope Village and was used a guideline to other projects throughout the country.
2. Research and Development
DHP has achieved the following in the research done and development made to the veggie tunnels, to make them more productive:
- Planting Program
- A working example of an irrigation system
- Changed the designs of the veggie tunnel from 9m to 12m, 14, and one medium tunnel
- Compost production for organic production in the tunnel
- A training manual
- Established veggie tunnel projects in 11 of regions of Namibia
- Table garden program for community consumption
These were some of the achievements being made
3. Financing
Much of the finances that were given came through Albie Oelofse. The funding came from private business owners, and the embassy of France. They sponsored our seeds, fertilizer, maintenance cost, and the salary for two extra gardeners
4. Exit of DHP sponsorship to Hope Village
After agreeing, Hope Village and DHP came to an exit strategy where the garden was handed over to Hope Village. Emmanuel Muyumba then relocated in the North East under DHP for a full organic horticulture program. The Hope Village garden is now under the management of 'the big children' who are looking after it. This was done after a close relationship was developed between Emmanuel and Peter, a boy from Hope Village, who has learnt from Emmanuel, the basic skills to manage the garden
DHP left the following equipment in place:
- One Small veggie tunnel (9Mx4M)
- One medium tunnel (8Mx15M)
- An irrigation system (pump with water lines, sprayers and sprinklers)
Conclusion
It was agreed that Emmanuel will carry on supporting the youth that are looking after the Hope Village garden in terms of training
Albert Fosso an expert in Horticulture, will be considering his options for helping with the veggie tunnels under NHT, giving extended training and to use it as a showcase in getting sponsorships for future projects
